Look at the following cartoon and observe the different types of conditionals.
Remember that there are 4 different types of conditionals. In this unit you'll only study two of them (or three): Zero, First and Second conditional.
ZERO CONDITIONAL: Use the zero conditional for a situation that is always true or for scientific facts.
If+ present simple, present simple
If you heat ice, it melts.
If I work too much, I get tired.
FIRST CONDITIONAL: Use the first conditional for a future real situation or a possible situation.
If+ present simple, WILL+ infinitive
If you study, you'll pass your test
If I have time, I'll help you with your homework
If it's sunny tomorrow, we'll go to the beach.
I'll call you, when I get home.
As soon as I get the results, I'll celebrate it with my friends.
I'll text you, while you go shopping.
SECOND CONDITIONAL: Use the second conditional for a future imaginary, unreal or hypothetical situation.
If+ past simple, WOULD+ infinitive
If I won the lottery, I would buy a convertible car.
If I could fly, I would never arrive late.
If I had some free time, I'd help you.
If I didn't have children, I'd travel more.
If I were you, I'd go to the dentist.
If I were you, I'd do all my English homework.
ZERO CONDITIONAL: Use the zero conditional for a situation that is always true or for scientific facts.
If+ present simple, present simple
If you heat ice, it melts.
If I work too much, I get tired.

If+ present simple, WILL+ infinitive

If I have time, I'll help you with your homework
If it's sunny tomorrow, we'll go to the beach.
- Remember the future time clauses with: UNLESS, AS SOON AS, WHEN, UNTIL, WHILE. After them write present simple NEVER future with WILL.
- Remember that we also use the second conditional to give advice. If I were you, I would (NEVER If I was you!)
If I were you, I'd go to the dentist.
If I were you, I'd do all my English homework.
What would you do? Use your imagination and finish the sentences.
