First or second conditional?
USES OF THE SECOND CONDITIONAL
FORM: If+past simple/ would, wouldn't+ infinitive
COMPARE: I don't have a car, so I can't pick you up from the port. (REAL SITUATION)
If I had a car, I would pick you up from the port. (IMAGINARY SITUATION)
FORM: If+past simple/ would, wouldn't+ infinitive
- Use the second conditional to talk about a hypothetical/ imaginary situation in the present or the future and its consequences.
COMPARE: I don't have a car, so I can't pick you up from the port. (REAL SITUATION)
If I had a car, I would pick you up from the port. (IMAGINARY SITUATION)
- After I/he/she/it you can use was or were (although were is more formal), e.g. If I was/were younger, I'd have another child. BUT in the expression If I were you... (TO GIVE ADVICE) you MUST use were NOT was.
- Typical mistakes!
- Using would in both clauses, e.g. If I would have more time, I would help you. (WRONG)
- Mixing up the form of first and second conditionals, e.g. If I knew he phone number, I'll call her.(WRONG)
- Using a first conditional where a second would be more appropriate or vice versa, e.g. If I'm shorter, I can wear those shoes. (WRONG)
- If I was you, I would talk to her. (WRONG)

Role-play Unit 7B
A You've been saving for your dream house for a long time. Now, that you have the money you are going to a real estate agency to see if you can buy it. Decide the type of house, area, facilities surrounding it, kind of neighbourhood, any particular furniture or features, price etc. Once you talk to the real estate agent, he tells you that the property you're looking for is not available. He/she's going to suggest you another property to buy, discuss the differences and get to a conclusion.
B You are a real estate agent. Today someone is visiting you to buy a property. He/she is interested in a particular house that unfortunately you don't have. As he/she is a valuable customer you can't miss the opportunity of selling a house so try to suggest other properties (decide which ones). Talk about the area, facilities, neighbourhood, any particular furniture or feature of the property/ies, price, etc. Finally, try to get to an agreement.
