UNIT 7A
2. GRAMMAR
Present perfect+ for and since
Remember that we have studied the Present perfect in Unit4A.
We use the Present perfect to say that a situation started in the past and has continued until now or it has some relevance in the present time.
e. g. I've been in the Languages school for 3 years.
We use for with a period of time, for example:
DAYS: a few days, three days, a day.
HOURS: half an hour, many hours, a couple of hours.
YEARS: two years, one year, ten years.
For ages
For a long time
We use since with the time when the action started, when we want to be exact, for example: last year, June 8, I met you.
Typical mistakes
* Don't use the present simple when you should use the present perfect.
e.g. I live here since three years/ since three years ago. (WRONG).
* Don't confuse for and since.
e.g. I've lived here since three years. (WRONG)
