3. GRAMMAR
PRESENT SIMPLE
Remember that we use the Present Simple in English for:
- Things you do every day, week, year or which are always true.
Eg. I go to English classes from Monday to Friday.
- Remember spelling rules for the 3rd person singular s:
study- studies consonant+y: change the y for ies
work-works add 's'
finish-finishes when the verb finishes in s, sh, ch, x add 'es'
- Remember irregular verbs:
have-has do-does go-goes
- Remember ASI and QUASI when making questions.
Adverbs of Frequency
REMEMBER!!! (You learnt this in Básico 1 - Unit 4C):
• Usually, normally and sometimes can also be used at the beginning of a present simple sentence, e.g. Sometimes I get up late on Saturday.
• Other common expressions of frequency are: every week, every month, every year.
• In expressions like once a month, twice a day, etc.
once and twice are irregular (NOT one time, two times). 'times' is used with all other numbers, e.g. ten times, thirty times (a year).
- We often use the present simple with adverbs of frequency (always, often, sometimes, usually)
- Adverbs of frequency go before the main verb but after the verb to be.
Eg. She sometimes goes to the gym Tom is always late for class.
- Expressions of frequency go normally at the end of the sentence.
Eg. I have swimming classes twice a week.
